British Schools in Bangkok

British is the default international curriculum in Bangkok. Of the 38 international schools ESG profiles in the city, 22 teach the English National Curriculum in some form, and they are spread across a fee range no other major expat city can match: from about US$6,000 a year to about US$35,000. That is the important structural fact for a relocating family. In Singapore, Hong Kong or Dubai, choosing British largely fixes your budget. In Bangkok it does not — the curriculum decision and the money decision are genuinely separate, and the questions that actually determine fit are the exit qualification at 18, the campus location relative to where you will live, and whether the school runs the full age range or will force a move at 11.

At a glance

Why Bangkok's British market has three fee bands, not one

The premium band starts at roughly US$16,000 and is dominated by the UK-branded through-schools: Harrow International School Bangkok at US$22,000–35,000, Bangkok Patana School and Wellington College International Bangkok at US$18,000–30,000, Brighton College Bangkok at US$16,000–28,000 and Shrewsbury's City Campus at US$16,000–24,000. These are large land holdings with pools, theatres, full-size pitches, deep A-Level option blocks and substantial expatriate teaching staff.

The mid band, from about US$10,000, is where the majority of self-funding families in Bangkok actually enrol: Denla British School and St Andrews International School at US$12,000–22,000, Bromsgrove International School Thailand at US$10,000–20,000, Modern International School at US$12,000–20,000, Regent International School and Bangkok International Preparatory School at US$10,000–18,000, and Garden International School at US$10,000–16,000. All are through-schools; all deliver IGCSE.

The lower band, from about US$6,000–8,000, has no equivalent in Singapore or Hong Kong. TSI International School lists from around US$6,000, and Anglo Singapore International School, St Stephen's International School, Singapore International School Bangkok, Traill International School, International Pioneers School and Kensington International School all list from around US$8,000. This band is a real option, not a compromise of last resort — but it rewards scrutiny of teacher turnover, class sizes and how many IGCSE subjects are genuinely offered.

A-Level or IB Diploma: the decision that outlives your posting

The most consequential difference between two apparently similar British schools in Bangkok is what happens at 16. Harrow, Brighton College Bangkok, Wellington College, Denla British School and Bromsgrove take students through IGCSE and then into A-Levels — three or four deep subjects, well suited to a student who already knows their direction and to UK university applications. Bangkok Patana School and St Andrews International School run an English National Curriculum lower and middle school, examine IGCSE, and then move the sixth form to the IB Diploma — six subjects plus the core, better suited to a broad student and to applications spread across several countries.

Parents choosing for a six-year-old routinely treat this as a detail to settle later. It is not, if you expect to stay. Switching schools at 16 in Bangkok means competing for the scarcest places in the city at exactly the moment your child least wants to move. Decide now which exit qualification you want at 18, and let that filter the shortlist before fees or facilities do.

Geography: the commute is part of the school

Bangkok traffic converts a 12-kilometre school run into an hour each way, so location is an academic decision, not a logistical one. Traill International School, Regent International School Bangkok, Kensington International School, Shrewsbury City Campus, Modern International School and Astra Academy are inner-city campuses within reach of Sukhumvit, Sathorn and Rama IX — smaller sites, shorter journeys, more use of shared and off-site facilities.

Bangkok Patana School, Harrow, Brighton College, Wellington College, Bromsgrove, Denla British School and St Andrews occupy far larger sites towards Bang Na, Krungthep Kreetha, Nonthaburi and the northern suburbs. The grounds are the reason to go, and most run extensive bus networks — but the bus route, not the map distance, is what determines whether your child leaves home at 06:30 or 07:30 for the next decade. Ask for the actual route and pick-up time for your address before you accept a place.

Age range: the schools that will make you move

Three British-curriculum settings in Bangkok are deliberately not through-schools. Kensington International School runs from age one to eleven, Shrewsbury International School City Campus from two to eleven, and New Sathorn International School is an early-years setting following the British EYFS with Reggio Emilia influence. Traill International School continues to fifteen, which covers IGCSE but not the sixth form.

None of that is a weakness — small primary-focused campuses are frequently the better environment for a young child, and Shrewsbury City Campus in particular is designed as a feeder. But it means a second admissions round, in a city where Year 7 and sixth-form places at the popular schools are the hardest to secure. If you enrol at a primary-only campus, identify the onward school at the same time and ask both schools what the transition actually looks like in practice.

What a UK brand does and does not guarantee

Six of Bangkok's British schools carry the name of a UK independent school. The licence typically brings governance oversight, shared professional development, curriculum frameworks and reputational accountability — which is genuinely worth something, and largely explains the premium band's pricing. It does not mean the same staff, the same selectivity, the same class profile or the same results as the school in England.

Judge the Bangkok campus on its own evidence: its most recent inspection or accreditation report, its published IGCSE and A-Level or IB outcomes, its staff retention rate, and the proportion of teachers holding UK qualifications. The unbranded schools in the mid band — Regent, Garden International, Bangkok International Preparatory, Modern International — should be assessed on exactly the same criteria. Several of them outperform assumptions based on fee level alone, and the only way to know is to ask for the numbers and visit.

How to shortlist, in order

Start with the exit qualification: A-Level or IB Diploma at 18. That single filter usually removes a third of the list. Then apply your realistic annual budget for the year your child will be in when your posting ends, not the year they start — internal fee ranges in Bangkok span 60–100% from the youngest to the oldest year group. Then filter by campus geography against the district you will actually live in, using bus route times rather than distance. Then check the age range runs far enough to avoid an unplanned move.

What survives that process is normally three or four schools, which is the right number to visit. Compare them on the things that only appear in person: how the children behave in corridors between lessons, how long the teachers have been there, whether the specialist rooms are in use or on display, and how directly admissions answers a question about staff turnover. Every school in the bands above publishes fees on ESG, so you can build the financial comparison before you land and spend your visit week on the things a fee schedule cannot tell you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many British-curriculum schools are there in Bangkok?

ESG profiles 38 international schools in Bangkok, and 22 of them teach the English National Curriculum in some form — from EYFS-only nurseries through to full through-schools running IGCSE and A-Level. That makes British the largest single curriculum group in the city, ahead of the IB and the American programmes.

Which British schools in Bangkok are the well-known names?

Harrow International School Bangkok, Bangkok Patana School, Shrewsbury International School, Brighton College Bangkok, Wellington College International Bangkok, Bromsgrove International School Thailand and Denla British School are the schools most families have heard of before they arrive. Several are branded partnerships with UK independent schools; that governs ethos and quality assurance rather than guaranteeing an identical experience.

What do British schools in Bangkok cost?

Listed annual tuition runs from roughly US$6,000 at TSI International School to about US$35,000 at Harrow. The bulk of the market sits between US$8,000 and US$22,000, which is why Bangkok is one of the few major expat cities where a British education is available across three genuinely distinct price bands rather than only at the top.

Do Bangkok British schools finish with A-Levels or the IB Diploma?

Both patterns exist and the difference matters. Harrow, Brighton College Bangkok, Wellington College, Denla British School and Bromsgrove take students through IGCSE to A-Level. Bangkok Patana School and St Andrews International School run an English National Curriculum lower school through IGCSE and then switch to the IB Diploma in the sixth form. Confirm the exit qualification before you apply, not in Year 10.

Are the cheaper British schools in Bangkok teaching the same curriculum?

In terms of the written curriculum, largely yes — the English National Curriculum, IGCSE and Cambridge pathways are externally defined and externally examined. What differs is teacher recruitment, class size, facilities, the breadth of IGCSE and A-Level option blocks, and how much of the co-curricular programme exists in practice. A US$10,000 school and a US$30,000 school can both deliver IGCSE English Literature well; only one of them will offer fourteen A-Level subjects.

Is a British school in Bangkok a good choice if we may move again?

It is one of the more portable options. IGCSE and A-Level are recognised across the UK, the Commonwealth, the Gulf and much of Asia, and the year-group structure maps cleanly onto British schools elsewhere. If your next posting is likely to be in the US, an American-curriculum or IB school may transfer more comfortably.

Which Bangkok British schools take children from age two?

Most of the through-schools do — Harrow, Patana, Brighton College, Wellington, Bromsgrove, Denla, St Andrews, Regent, Traill and TSI all list an entry age of one or two. Kensington International School and Shrewsbury's City Campus are deliberately primary-only, and New Sathorn International School is an early-years setting, so those three require a planned move later on.

Where in Bangkok are the British schools?

They split roughly into central campuses and outer-ring campuses. Traill, Regent, Kensington, Shrewsbury City Campus, Modern International School and Astra Academy are inner-city sites reachable from Sukhumvit, Sathorn and Rama IX. Patana, Harrow, Brighton College, Wellington, Bromsgrove, Denla and St Andrews sit on larger land holdings towards Bang Na, Krungthep Kreetha, Nonthaburi and the north — bigger grounds, longer commutes.

Does a UK-branded name mean a UK-standard school?

It means an agreed licence, a governance relationship and usually shared professional development with the founding school. It does not mean the same staff, the same intake or the same results. Judge the Bangkok campus on its own inspection reports, its own A-Level or IGCSE outcomes and its own staff retention — the brand is a starting point for your shortlist, not a conclusion.

How early should we apply to a British school in Bangkok?

Six to twelve months ahead for the popular through-schools, particularly for Year 7 and sixth-form entry, and longer if you need a specific year group at Patana, Harrow or Shrewsbury. Mid-year entry is often possible in the smaller and lower-fee schools, which is worth knowing if your posting date moves.
